UPDATE: There has been a room change for this meeting. It will now be held in the Wando Room which is in the lobby level of the Embassy Suites hotel.
SICB 2012 is only three weeks away and a large number of biologists interested in Anolis evo-devo and genomics are expected to attend the Charlestown Meeting. Twenty-six presentations of anole research are scheduled, many with aspects of genomics, comparative development, physiology, or molecular evolution as one of their primary components (see my previous post here). To facilitate discussion among researchers from these disparate disciplines we are organizing an open discussion on the resources currently available to this young, but rapidly growing community. For example, beyond the A. carolinensis genome what sequencing efforts are underway? Because we do not yet have transgenic technologies, what cell-based resources are being generated that can be used to test molecular hypotheses in vitro? As the community builds its experimental and comparative infrastructure discussions such as this will be necessary to avoid costly duplication of efforts and to determine the needs of the community at large.
This meeting will be held near the end of SICB: Friday January 6th from 7:00 to 8:30 in Room 4 on the Convention Center. Following the meeting informal discussion will move to the Falls Lounge Area of the Embassy Suites. We have organized the meeting into two parts. To introduce currently available resources and ongoing community-wide activities the first half of the meeting will have brief (6-8minute) presentations. The second half will be dedicated to discussing what is needed to move the community’s research efforts forward (more sequencing, better annotation, new species to target, etc.). The goal of the meeting to set an agenda for future community-based objectives and to foster discussion among the body of anole researchers.
A tentative list of speaker topics is as follows:
– Resources and directions for comparative anole Evo-devo (T. Sanger)
– Comparative transcriptomics and experimental molecular (C. Infante)
– Cell-based resources (N. Wilson-Rawls)
– Additional sequencing efforts and gene annotation (K. Kusumi)
– Building additional community-based resources and databases. (T. Hsieh and R. – Kulathinal)
Anyone wishing to give a brief presentation is welcome to do so. Please email me directly if you have a topic that you would like to include. For those not attending the meeting please add suggestions for additional discussion topics below. A summary of this meeting will be posted to Anole Annals following the meeting.

I’m really glad to hear that this meeting will be happening and sorry that I won’t be there to participate. I hope to hear more about the insights shared at SICB at Anole Annals!

Rich – a last minute social, turned into a last minute discussion, turned into a last minute meeting. But it would be naive to think that we can address the needs of the entire community in just 1.5 hours. It is almost for certain that additional meetings will follow at a later time.

Excellent, I hope I can be involved!
