I recently received an email from UC Davis undergraduate and lizard enthusiast, Kirk Sato. On a recent trip to Belize, Kirk snapped a great photograph of this anole and he wants to know what species it is. What are your ideas, folks?

I’ll guess Norops lemurinus…

That’s what I was going to guess, too, but didn’t have the courage!

After much debate in our lab, we came to the consensus that this is likely A. lemurinus. We went back and forth on whether or not it might be A. capito, which is also found in Belize, but we’re leaning towards A. lemurinus because of the W shape on the head. Anolis lemurinus is far more common, as well. To quote one lab member, “99% of the time you think you’ve got an A. capito, it’s actually A. lemurinus.”
Thanks for sharing, Kirk!

Thanks everyone! Unfortunately, I don’t have any more photos of this beauty…I guess I’ll just have to go back to Belize! Happy herping!
